What is Art Therapy?

Arts Therapy uses creative processes to support individuals to express and explore material that may be too difficult to articulate using words alone. It is a therapeutic experience facilitated by a trained and registered Creative Arts Therapist.

Psychotherapeutic principles work alongside the arts to provide a safe space to reconnect with one’s creativity, imagination and sense of play. These are utilised to explore and make sense of lived experience.

Arts Therapy creates opportunities to engage the mind|hinengaro, body|tinana and spirit|wairua in an exploration of the self. Clients are nurtured by a supportive environment where you're able to view and understand your way of being with the world. All in all, this promotes self-expression, improves self-esteem, awareness and growth.

Who is it for?

Arts Therapy is for anyone, from children, to teenagers and adults of any age or background looking to enhance or improve their mental health and well-being. No prior knowledge of the arts is necessary.

Arts Therapy can be powerful for children who are struggling emotionally or living with trauma. Some of these issues include navigating divorce or the separation of parents, physical or sexual abuse, bullying, social issues, struggles with body-image, low self-esteem or navigating change. Arts Therapy provides a non-verbal outlet for children to explore experiences, particularly when they are unable to find the words for them.
